Blue Tongue Skink (Tiliqua spp.)

Blue tongue skinks are stocky, intelligent lizards named for their distinctive bright blue tongue, which they display to startle predators. Several species are kept as pets, most commonly the Northern Blue Tongue (T. scincoides intermedia) and Indonesian species.

Housing

A 40-gallon (150L) or larger enclosure is needed. Blue tongues are terrestrial and need floor space rather than height. Deep substrate (6+ inches) allows them to burrow — a natural behaviour that reduces stress.

Temperature

  • Basking spot: 95–105°F (35–40°C)
  • Warm side: 85–90°F (29–32°C)
  • Cool side: 70–80°F (21–27°C)

Humidity

Varies by species — Northern BTS prefer 40–60%; Indonesian species (Halmahera, Irian Jaya) need 60–80%.

Feeding

Blue tongue skinks are omnivores. Feed a varied diet of commercial dog or cat food (grain-free, meat first ingredient), leafy greens, vegetables, and occasional fruit. Supplement with calcium and D3.

Disposition

With regular handling from a young age, blue tongue skinks become very tame and curious. They are known for their dog-like personalities.
