Green Tree Python
Morelia viridisGreen Tree Python (Morelia viridis)
Green tree pythons are arguably the most visually stunning snakes kept in captivity. Their vivid emerald green colouration, perching behaviour, and striking yellow or white markings make them a prized display animal.
⚠️ Note: Green tree pythons are advanced-level snakes. They can be nippy, have precise husbandry needs, and are best suited for experienced keepers. They are not recommended as a first snake.
Housing
A tall enclosure is essential — GTPs spend virtually all their time off the ground, perching on branches with their body looped over in their distinctive saddle posture. A minimum enclosure of 24×24×36 inches for adults. Provide horizontal perches at multiple heights.
Temperature & Humidity
- Warm side: 82–88°F (28–31°C)
- Cool side: 75–80°F (24–27°C)
- Night drop to 72°F (22°C) is beneficial
- Humidity: 70–80% — maintain with regular misting
Feeding
GTPs can be reluctant feeders, especially during colour change from juvenile yellow/red to adult green. Use tongs or feeding hooks — never hand-feed. Frozen/thawed mice or rats appropriately sized.
Colour Change
Juveniles are born bright yellow, red, or orange. They transition to adult green colouration between 6 months and 2 years of age.
