Leopard Gecko
Eublepharis maculariusLeopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius)
Leopard geckos are among the most widely kept reptiles in the hobby. They are ground-dwelling, nocturnal lizards from the rocky deserts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northwestern India.
Housing
A 20-gallon (75L) tank is the minimum for one adult. Do not cohabit males — they will fight. Provide at least three hides: warm, cool, and a humid hide for shedding.
Temperature
Use an under-tank heat mat on a thermostat on one side. Do not use heat rocks — they cause burns.
- Warm side: 88–92°F (31–33°C)
- Cool side: 70–75°F (21–24°C)
Feeding
Leopard geckos eat live insects: crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms, and occasional waxworms as a treat. Dust feeders with calcium + D3 every other feeding. They do not eat plants or fruit.
Shedding
A humid hide with damp sphagnum moss is critical for a clean shed. Retained shed on toes can cut off circulation — soak the gecko in warm shallow water and gently remove with a wet cotton swab if needed.
