Red-Tailed Boa (Boa constrictor)

Red-tailed boas are magnificent, large constrictors native to Central and South America. They are beautiful snakes with rich, iridescent scales and distinctive reddish-brown tail patterning.

⚠️ Note: These are large, powerful snakes. Adults can reach 8–10 feet and require significant enclosure space. They are not recommended as a first snake — prior experience with medium-sized colubrids is strongly advised.

Housing

Juveniles can start in a 20-gallon but adults require a minimum 6×3×2 foot enclosure (about 120 gallons or custom build). Provide sturdy branches for semi-arboreal behaviour, secure hides, and a large water dish for soaking.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Warm side: 88–92°F (31–33°C)
  • Cool side: 78–82°F (26–28°C)
  • Humidity: 60–70% — essential for proper shedding

Feeding

Feed appropriately-sized frozen/thawed prey (rabbits for large adults). Never handle within 48 hours of feeding.

Lifespan

Boas commonly live 20–30 years. This is a long-term commitment.
