Overview

Savannahs are among the most popular in the pet trade. Compared to other monitors, this species is more docile and easy-going. They’re friendlier to humans with proper socialization.

Housing

You will likely need a custom made enclosure as a monitor lizard would have an entire room in an ideal world. The minimum would be a 55g for an 18" lizard with lots of handing for daily exercise.

Temperature

Basking spots should reach temperatures between 90-110F while the enclosure should be kept in the mid 80F

Humidity

60 - 70% humidity. Misting the enclosure daily and providing a large water bowl will help maintain these levels.

Feeding

Savannah monitors love to eat. With big appetites weight gain can be problematic so be sure to watch what you feed them. They do best on a diet of rodents and insects though they are omnivores. Crickets Dubia roaches Mealworms Earthworms Superworms Grasshoppers Pinkies and fuzzies Ensure you dust your insects with calcium and multivitamin powder to avoid metabolic bone disease.

Handling

Savannah monitor lizards are great for handling. It is important to socialize them from a young age to ensure they recognize you and trust you.

Additional Notes

The average lifespan for most savannah monitors is 8 - 12 years however some can live for as long as 15 years. They can also get up to 13 pounds!
