Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus)

Veiled chameleons are stunning, colour-changing lizards from the mountains of Yemen and Saudi Arabia. They are visually spectacular but have specific husbandry requirements that make them better suited to experienced keepers.

⚠️ Note: Chameleons are stress-sensitive and do not tolerate handling well. They are best kept as display animals rather than pets to be handled regularly.

Housing

Use a tall, well-ventilated screen enclosure — a minimum of 24×24×48 inches for an adult male. Do not use glass tanks — chameleons need airflow and stress easily when they can see their own reflection. Fill with live or artificial plants and many branches at varying heights.

Temperature & Lighting

  • Basking spot: 85–90°F (29–32°C)
  • Ambient: 72–80°F (22–27°C)
  • Night drop to 60–65°F (15–18°C) is beneficial
  • Strong UVB (T5 HO 6%, 10.0) is essential

Hydration

Chameleons drink from water droplets on leaves, not standing water. Mist 2–3 times daily or use an automated misting system. A dripper system is also recommended.

Feeding

Feed gut-loaded insects (crickets, dubia roaches, hornworms, silkworms). Dust with calcium at most feedings and D3 twice monthly. Males can also eat some plant matter.
